Personal Review Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

The world has been devastated by hundreds of years of war, and only a few bits of nature are left. Nausicaa sees how important the remaining forest is to her people.

Like in many of Miyazaki’s stories, Princess Nausicaa is a strong female character. She learns that there is more than black and white, good and evil. That sometimes good must protect itself. Princess Nausicaa and the people of the Valley are engaged in a constant struggle with powerful insects called ohmu, who guard a poisonous jungle that is spreading across the Earth.

Like all of Miyazaki’s films, the artwork is astonishing. Princess Nausicaa’s visit to the toxic forest is incredible.. and the creatures familiar yet otherworldly. There are so many eye popping scenes in this movie.

This film hammers home the importance of taking care of the environment (maybe a little too forcefully). But it’s well worth seeing.

This movie is rated PG, so maybe not the best for the very young.
